Task 2- Contempary music video

I have selected two of Mark Romenak’s music videos, as I feel he is a very creative director and has produced some award winning work. He has work with stars such
as Audioslave, David Bowie, Johnny cash, Coldplay, Michael + Janet Jackson Jay-z,
Lenny Kravitz, Linkin park, Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sonic Youth. He is very big in the film industry as he has also been involved in many successful Films such as Static, One Hour Photo, A cold case and is now working on a film called Wolf Man due to be released early this year.
The first music video I have chosen to Analyse is the 2002 hit, Audioslave with Cochise.

The Video was shot in the quite town of San Fernando Valley America 2002. Mark Romenak said this was his hardest video he has ever shot, due to the logistic used. This was the first time Audioslave had played together on a stage.
Audioslave were a hard rock group formed in 2001. The band Consisted of ex Super garden Lead singer Chris Cornell, two guitarist from Rage Against the Machine Tom Morello and Tim Commerford, and Brad Wik on drums. Critics say they where a modern version of Led Zepplin Which gave them confidence. This video was the first time the bad have every played together on a real stage.
The video was filmed out side in an open field at night. They shot it at night so they could use lighting to there advantage, because at the beginning scene when they arrive on the back of a pick up truck They used flood lights on either side of the dirt track this was to make it seem more dramatic. You don’t know what is going to happen next as the music as slowly building up in the background, getting louder. When the truck stops beside the scaffolding at 16 seconds in, it switches to the lead singer at the top of the building with an MCU shot head banging to the beat with smoke behind him so you see his outline to makes him see mysterious.
The main performance was on a 60ft scaffolding which was specially built for this production as no building site would allow them to perform on there structure. They made it look like a building site by having tankers, generators tools in shot, this made it look realistic and believable. They used a construction lift to get them to the top of the building which made the start of video very exiting as they all looking at each other with serious expressions taking deep breaths, building the tension.
At 34 seconds in when one of the band members pushes the lever to the lift up a guitar kicks in and drums get faster; this makes each movement more dramatic. They seem to be in control of the music even though they are not playing. When the lift get to the top and one of the band member presses the button to open the door a drum symbol is played each movement they do controls the music makes it more theatrical.
When the band start to perform the layout is similar to other rock videos as it has the band playing throughout the video guitars, drums and vocals with a microphone which is stereotypical to the rock genre, makes it more like a stage performance.
500 fire works was used in this video, they were used for the effect in the background and mainly to light performance, this made the performance look its on stage and it was unexpected made it more impressive. The fireworks went to the beat of the song as well which linked the visual and the music really well from 57 seconds onwards which is really cleaver, keeps you watching as its really eye-catching.
They use a wide range of shots on this video this was to get the effect of the fireworks in the background in shot and to make the video more entertaining and different. Throughout the music video there are several medium shots, including both the Band member and there instrument this is a usually shot in rock videos as its trademark to be playing an instrument.
This video would have been expensive as to construct a 60ft building, and then attach 500 fireworks to it and wire them up to go off at the right time. Also The VLS (1 minuet 9 seconds into the video) where you see the whole structure and the fire works behind going off you see the space used and amount of effort has gone into this video makes it seem expensive.
There was hardly light used at all on the main performance as most light came from the fireworks which made the band appear as black shapes which is every effective. This video was made with no effects as mark wanted to keep the effect of the fireworks. They kept the camera steady for each shot that is because if they had it zooming in and out moving/shakey it would lose the effect of fireworks in the background and it would be hard to follow the story of the song. it has been edited into a pattern, as it shows 3 shots of the band MCU's and CU's then goes to a wide shot of the whole site or of the stage, also switching shot to the beat to make it sync really well with the music.
All shots are filmed exterior, most action takes place on top of the constructed building or next to it. All shots where based on standard shot they kept the camera steady and smooth. Each shot cuts to next no effects used in this at all. most of the lighting was off the fireworks to make it seem more dramtic. One of the main assests and strenghs of the music video is the lighting effects produced, which sets a very good vibe.

The second video I have chosen to Analyse is the 2004 hip-hop hit by Shawn Corey Carter also known as Jay-z with 99 Problems;Produced by Rick Rubin this video was nominated for four MVPA awards in 2005, of which it won three. It also won the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rap Video, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Cinematography, as well as gaining nominations for Video of the Year and Best Male Video.

The video was shot in Jay-z home town Brooklyn, New York. The whole video was shot in black and white this was to make the video come across as being dark and hard, but it was also used as a point, the song is about problems jay-z has gone through and one of the problems is him being treated different because he is black. The first scene of the video is the camera coming up stairs on to the main road; this is a really good start to the video as Its saying welcome to my life giving us an insight to how he lived his life, as the camera moves from the underground to ground level. For the first 20 seconds it shows shots of places where Jay-z famous places to him in Brooklyn (10 – 17 seconds). For the first 58 seconds of the video the camera shot switches in time with the beat and just showing clips of the city of Brooklyn and of the people in it and how they live also of Jay z in the streets.

The lyrics are about how people are treated different because of the way they look and act, and the problems he has had to deal with but proving them wrong. 1 minuet into the song you can see visual and the lyrics coming together as he talks about being stop by the police and show how he overcame the situation, it shows a re-enactment.
You can tell this is a Hip-hop rap video as it shows the hard life they live or lived and battle they fight for also showing off what they have or done. The video is part narrative as it shows the stories of the “99 problems” that have taken place, follows him around.
I think this video promote Jay-z really well as it says about his life and what he has gone through his beliefs and what he is all about, If you’re a hip-hop fan you will find this track catchy as it has a strong beat and repetitive. You also would look up to him as he proven he has had problems and got through them easily and had fun.
The target audience for this song would be for the younger generation as it’s about his problems as a youngster also the style of music statistically appeals to the younger generation.
One of the main unique thing about this video is that the camera is never steady and is always moving which dose make it eye- catching and makes you want to watch on.
Fans on Jay z website have said this to be "the best hip hop video ever made"

Purpose of Research

Primary research is where you get the research yourself such as specific facts and figures, instead of going onto to the internet and using some body else's research. it is more flexible so you can target your research to more related to you. this would be more reliable than someone who has a website which is known as secondary research.

secondary research is when you take the information from another source such as wikipedia and other informational sources like books where the research has been written and found by someone else
